Disqus UWP 'Beta' over, transitioned to full release in the Store

Added: 23.06.2017 2:49 | 0 views | 0 comments

Disqus has been very competent in the way its handled its UWP beta application for Windows 10 (including mobile) - with a separate 'Beta' entry in the Store, when it was actually useable, back in January. But now the beta period is finally over, with testers receiving a pointer message over to the original URL in the Microsoft Store, which now serves up the full, non-beta Disqus UWP to anyone running Windows 10 on their (e.g.) phone.

Mini-review: Slack (Beta)

Added: 23.06.2017 2:49 | 0 views | 0 comments

Look, at some point in a product's life cycle, a reviewer has to ignore the 'Beta' part of a name and just review the darned thing. Google famously had both Gmail and Google Maps in 'beta' for about five years. Mind you, they were both free. Come to think of it, so is Slack here, so I'll cut it some, errr.... slack, and simply look at it as-is. I can't delay any longer! It's not a full Windows 10 UWP, but it is universal, i.e. WinRT and behaves much in the same way.

Project Neon, Fluent Design and Windows 10 Mobile

Added: 22.06.2017 19:42 | 0 views | 0 comments

We've heard a lot about 'Project Neon' and the future look and feel of Windows 10, but what it is, what it requires, and where it will appear, all seem to be subject to quite a bit of confusion. So here I'm trying to draw all the strands together - here's how 'Neon', or 'Fluent Design System' as it's now officially known, manifests itself on phones, if it's needed at all.

There has been another significant update to AAWP's own (ahem) much praised UWP application for Windows 10 Mobile. v1.5 adds more UI tweaks, Disqus improvements and an option to donate to the developer. Thanks (a million) as always to Joe Blumenow..

Mini-review: zTwitch UWP

Added: 21.06.2017 13:38 | 0 views | 0 comments

Have you heard about Twitch? No? Then you're over 40(!) If you're under (about) 40 then you'll know that Twitch is the worldwide, cross-platform, gameplay video streaming service. Gamers across the world love sitting in darkened rooms with headphones on, immersed in virtual worlds for hours on end. And, it seems, millions of others love to watch them. Which is where Twitch comes in. Needless to say, there's no official client for Windows 10 Mobile, but we do now have this third party UWP application, zTwitch, and it's extremely slick.

Spotify becomes a Windows 10 Store app, but you need Spoticast UWP

Added: 21.06.2017 8:21 | 0 views | 0 comments

I'm sure you saw the news overnight that Spotify has now appeared in the Windows 10 Store, thanks to the Centennial Bridge, meaning that it can be part of proceedings on - for example - Windows 10 S. A major scalp for the platform, though there's unlikely to be an explicit W10M version now, so mobile users still need to think laterally.

First glimpse of 'CShell' running on Windows 10 Mobile hardware

Added: 21.06.2017 2:53 | 0 views | 0 comments

Now, Zac from WC and I have quite a lot in common - we're both Brits, we both leap on new builds of Windows 10 Mobile and devour them - but we also have different levels of risk aversion, it seems. When Microsoft , Zac and I both grabbed it anyway. I was this close to letting it install, despite warnings of 'bootloops', but chickened out at the last minute and cancelled the update on my test devices. Zac meanwhile thought 'what the heck' and somehow negotiated his way around the bootloop on an HP Elite x3 - or maybe the problems don't happen on the Snapdragon 820 chipset?
Anyway, to cut a long story short, he found that this new Redstone 3 build of Windows 10 Mobile included the new CShell or 'Composable Shell' and so, a few days on, we have a nice video from Zac demonstrating it. We have landscape operation (albeit not very optimally) of the Start screen and we have a more advanced experience in Continuum mode, with resizeable windows. Both nice to haves, though the real significance of what he's showing in the video is more profound, as I comment at the bottom here.

As the name suggests, this is a medication reminder application, very useful if what you take is critical to your health and well being each day. It's also a full UWP app and so will work on your Windows 10 desktop as well as your phone.

Microsoft Teams finally completed for Windows 10 Mobile

Added: 21.06.2017 2:53 | 0 views | 0 comments

, Microsoft has just now got round to implementing its new (commercial Office 365-tied) Teams service as a complete UWP application for Windows 10 Mobile. Way behind the Android and iOS versions, annoyingly, but at least Teams is now more or less complete on Microsoft's own platform.
